COGENERATION SYSTEM
The newly built boiler house in Camminghaburen was provided with a Cat G3520E CHP cogeneration system. Rob Muurling, Project Manager Pon Power explains: “This is an engine with an integrated gas-fired power generator. Our heat power installation converts fuel to electricity at a rate of 42%, the rest is converted to heat. We sell the electricity to the local power grid. The heat is used to heat the water, which is then pumped through the central heating systems of the homes in Camminghaburen and Vrijheidswijk. As you can see, the knife cuts two ways.” Adds Rob Kee, Project Manager with Ennatuurlijk: “This is a highly energy efficient and commercially viable system, since the installation is operational 20 to 24 hours per day. In periods of peak demand, for example, when the weather is extremely cold, there are two more gas-fired boilers on standby, which are able to deliver additional heat for a limited time. All told, this project will allow us to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions of at least 40,000 ton, over a 30 year term. And that’s a beautiful result.”
Camminghaburen, a housing estate in Leeuwarden, until recently was heated via the district heating system. The heat generation plant servicing the homes had been in service since the 1980s and, at that ripe old age, was due for replacement.
In order for the installation to be replaced the municipality of Leeuwarden contracted Ennatuurlijk, an energy company that develops and implements sustainable energy projects for power
and heat throughout the Netherlands, together with local partners. Erik Stronk, managing director of Ennatuurlijk, explains: “The cooperation with the Leeuwarden municipality felt comfortable and natural from the start. The plans for the new boiler house to be built in Camminghaburen and the ambitions of the city council perfectly matched the long term vision and ambitions of Ennatuurlijk.” In close consultation with the city council, it was decided to also connect the nearby housing estate Vrijheidswijk, a kilometer away, to the new system. This made the project even more interesting commercially.

ENNATUURLIJK
Ennatuurlijk is an energy company that works with local partners throughout the Netherlands on renewable energy sources and CO2 reduction. When a 33 year old heat installation in Leeuwarden was due for replacement, Ennatuurlijk was able to kill two birds with one stone. Not only did they replace the old heat generation plant by a new, more efficient installation with boilers and a Cat CHP cogeneration system but they were also able to connect another nearby housing estate to the new system.
