Kees Egas
Owner and Managing Director of VOF SVB Egas
“We’re a family that believes in long term relationships with customers and suppliers. That’s why the choice for Pon Power was an easy one.”
EXCELLENT OFFER
"They offered expert advice, and eventually presented an excellent offer, so it didn’t take me long to decide. Seeing that my home berth is in Arnemuiden, it was very practical for them being able to handle the work from the base in Vlissingen. That’s just around the corner from where I am.” A good two weeks after the work was started, the engine overhaul was completed. The first test ride was successful and the ship was back in the trade only a few days later. Service technician Casper de Rover, beams: “I look out on the river mouth from here. Kees Egas went past yesterday. From the way he greeted me, I can safely assume he’s still happy with the result!”

COMPLETE ENGINE OVERHAUL
After about 45,000 hours of loyal service the Pon Power-installed Cat 3508 of the MS Noordendiep was due for a major service. Because Egas wanted to keep his Cat going for a good many more years, he opted for a complete engine overhaul, and asked Pon Power to quote him for the work. Egas: “I come from a long line of inland skippers and in our family we believe in long term relationships with customers and suppliers. When Pon Power heard that my Cat needed the overhaul, they did some important prep work."

technicians with a small workshop and limited parts storage. A service branch is a physical location where customers can call in. A service branch has a larger storage capacity and in principle is staffed full-time, to assist customers on the spot. Explains De Rover: “From our new service location in Vlissingen I do maintenance, engine overhauls and fault repair service. Regular customers can phone me direct, they don’t need to be connected to head office. It’s faster and adds a personal touch.” One customer who has opted for the personal approach is Kees Egas, owner and managing director of the motor barge MS Noordendiep. With his 85 meter long ship, Egas hauls sand under permanent contract with Van Oord.
INLAND CARGO SHIPPING IS PICKING UP TRADE
Pon Power service technician, Casper de Rover, is our spirited host. Barely taking time to sit down with a coffee, he begins his story: “After several lean years, business in the region is looking up. Inland cargo shipping is picking up trade, and by all accounts, the Dutch navy is likely coming back to Vlissingen, while the tugboat industry is booming. Put that together, given that all those tugboats are powered by Cat engines, it made a lot of sense for us to set up a drop point in Vlissingen.” OK. But what’s the story again as regards drop points and service locations?

MS NOORDENDIEP
Maritime activity in the Vlissingen region has notably picked up, and the rising curve shows no end in sight. Thus, it was a logical move for Pon Power to set up a service location in the Zeeland town of Vlissingen. With a complete engine overhaul on the MS Noordendiep the service point had an auspicious beginning to the new year. Pon Power News visited the town on the mouth of the Westerschelde to find out more.
