FACTS & FIGURES
Klaas Krook
Accountmanager Pon Power
“This is the first complete, turn-key hybrid system available on the market. We’re actually a bit proud of that.”
EPATROL
The new system, which was named ePatrol, is based on a standard diesel engine, a six-cylinder Cat C9.3. This engine serves as a platform that can be modularly extended. The engine’s transmission is attached to an electromotor running at equal RPM with the main engine. The additional electrical power serves to reduce the required output from the diesel engine with resultant reduced emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and reduced maintenance. To maintain the system in optimal condition a plug-in recharging functionality is optionally available. And, the system can be extended with a battery range, in which case the electromotor has the additional function of recharging the battery.
Klaas Krook: “The advantages speak for themselves. Customers can now have a total system installed in a single operation. Running costs are reduced and emissions are lower. Let’s face it, these days the environment is a factor that certainly a semi-government body cannot afford to overlook. This system offers customers a single permanent point of contact for service, maintenance and fault clearing service and, thanks to the battery, provides a solution that is future-ready. That’s hard to beat!”
Peter Snijders
Business Developer Pon Power
“We analyzed the data from 900,000 running hours to arrive at this solution”
CUSTOMER-DRIVEN INNOVATION
“Where it gets tricky with hybrid technology in the maritime industry is that there are no standards solutions yet”, explains Klaas Krook, Account Manager at Pon Power. “Developments are unfolding at a fast pace, meaning that every ship that uses a hybrid solution is essentially a floating prototype. That’s challenging and exciting, up to a point, but it does make life more difficult at times, notably for captains and owners. Who do you talk to when something goes wrong? When multiple parties are involved with the construction and installation of your hybrid system, no one really is responsible.”
Pon Power saw the opportunity and decided to develop a complete turn-key system. As the sector of focus, port and coastal patrol was chosen, a logical decision. “We understand the patrolling sector like no-one”, explains Peter Snijders, Business Developer at Pon Power. “In our systems we have logged a wealth of data on the use of vessels, in other words, the patterns that produces a typical nautical profile. When we started out on this project, we analyzed 900,000 running hours, in order to determine the common denominator and prime needs of the sector. In that respect the new hybrid solution is a 100% customer-driven innovation: fully geared and built to match the requirements and nautical profiles of typical patrol vessels.”
Hybrid solutions are the future in the auto industry, and it’s no different in the maritime industry: diesel when needed, electrical where possible, and often, a combination of both. Especially in semi-government, water-borne services, such as port and coastal patrolling, the demand for clean/hybrid solutions is on the rise. Since Pon Power has extensive experience and know-how of this industry, the company decided to build a complete, turn-key hybrid system, especially geared to the needs of the sector. Pon Power News set out to investigate.
