For that reason, Amels and Pon Power have a close, decades-long relationship, and the first five ships in the AMELS 242 range were all equipped with a Cat 3516C. However, the introduction of the IMO III emission requirements meant that harmful NOx emissions needed to be reduced. “The fully IMO-III-certified Cat 3516E has been part of Pon Power’s engine programme for some time now, so complying with those emission requirements is not an issue at all”, says Chris Schatsbergen, Account Manager Marine Business at Pon Power. “However, the system does work with a Cat SCR, an exhaust treatment system that is the maritime equivalent of the catalytic converter and ‘cleanses’ exhaust gases through the addition of urea. All in all, this means a lot less installation space is required compared with the standard Cat 3516.”

EXISTING ENGINE ROOM

Arie Midavaine adds: “And in the serial design of our AMELS 242, simply enlarging the engine room is not possible, so the only option was to install the two larger propulsion units in the existing engine room.

EXACTLY FIT

This presented the teams of Amels and Pon Power with a complicated puzzle. “Fortunately, the Cat SCR can be installed in any conceivable angle or position, and that’s how we were able to find a solution”, says Chris Schatsbergen. “We positioned the system in a way that enabled us to exactly

fit everything in using a compact damper and a flexible inlet and discharge layout. We’re obviously very happy with the result.” And everyone at Amels is happy too, not least because this compact solution is delivered fully certified.

FULLY CERTIFIED

Midavaine says: “We recently developed a system for a different project, combining components from various suppliers. Apart from involving a lot of work, it also requires additional test days in order to have everything certified. And if there’s ever a problem, it will be more difficult to pinpoint the exact cause and the manufacturer that’s responsible for it. This system is fully certified by Caterpillar and there won’t be any doubt about who we’ll need to contact in the event of a malfunction. There’s no risk for us. And the affordability of the system simply makes this an ideal solution in our view.”

Chris Schatsbergen, smiling: “I can only agree with that.”

AMELS INSTALLS FIRST IMO III ENGINES IN SUPERYACHT

The Netherlands has a long and rich tradition in building superyachts, and Amels is one of the foremost suppliers in this market. The world’s wealthiest buyers regularly visit Vlissingen to order unique, high-end and high-tech yachts from this company, which celebrates its centenary this year.

Amels is currently working on a 74-metre-long beauty, which is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2020. The new IMO III emission requirements presented an interesting challenge when installing the Cat 3516E engines.

ROBUST, RELIABLE AND VERSATILE

“The Cat 3516 is a fantastic engine. It is robust, reliable and uniquely versatile.” Arie Midavaine, Project Manager for Amels, does not hide his enthusiasm. “If there’s a problem, you can basically be sure the engine is not the source.” It is one of the reasons why Amels practically always works with Cat engines.
