FIRST SHIP WITH C9.3 IMO III GENERATOR SET COMMISSIONED

Compact and low-noise generator set is delivered fully IMO-III-certified

INTERVIEW
DAAN DE JONG

In 2017, Pon Power introduced a unique new generator set: C9.3 IMO III, the first Cat generator set to satisfy the new, stricter IMO Tier III emission standards. That same year, it sold the first C9.3 IMO III generator sets, which have since been installed. After successfully rounding off its trials, the ship in question has now been taken into service. We talk with Pon Power’s Yachting account manager Daan de Jong about various technical aspects of the project.

THE BASICS

De Jong: “Let’s start with the basics. This IMO III generator set consists of a Cat Marine Diesel Engine, model C9.3 DITA, which in this case has been fitted with a Cat generator. A great feature of our C9.3 is that it offers a great deal of flexibility when it comes to choosing a generator. In this particular project, we used complete Cat generator sets.

IMO III GECERTIFIED

The C9.3 generator set is fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. This system ensures that NOx emissions are below the maximum set by the Tier III emission standard throughout the engine’s service life. The system consists of a Clean Emissions Module (CEM) with a catalyst, a Pump Electronic Tank Module (PETU) and an Electronic Control Module (ECM), which features a closed loop system that controls the injection of Diesel Exhaust Fluid in the Clean Emissions Module.

CLOSED LOOP CONTROL SYSTEM

Daan de Jong explains: “The Closed Loop Control system offers significant advantages. For example, it allows the user to bunker Diesel Exhaust Fluid in a variety of concentrations (Europe 35%; US 40%) without having to adjust the system first.” But there are other benefits besides: the Clean Emissions Module removes all ammonia residues – meaning the engine can be fitted with standard exhaust silencers. And the system prevents the catalytic converters from becoming damaged or burned by ammonia build-up.

QUIET SHHH…IP ENGINES

And De Jong has another ace up his sleeve: “You want to keep noise to a bare minimum – particularly when you’re building a yacht. The C9.3 IMO III generator set can be housed in a variety of sound-absorbing units. In this specific case, we opted for a cabinet designed by Alara-Lukagro Noise Control Solutions. This firm has developed a unit that can reduce ambient noise by no less than 30dB. To give an idea of what kind of an effect that has: it’s the difference between the sound level emitted by a washing machine or dryer and the public library!” An outstanding achievement. Because never before has a manufacturer succeeded in achieving such a strong dampening effect with such a compact unit. What’s more: by carefully positioning the different components, the builder has been able to realise sufficient internal ventilation for engine cooling. All in all, Pon Power is delighted with how the project has turned out.

TOTAL PACKAGE

De Jong concludes: “It took some time to fit all the pieces of the puzzle in technical terms. But at the end of the day, we can offer our clients a very compact, very quiet total package. And the great thing is: CAT actually supplies the IMO III certificate along with the unit – which means that no further tests are required. Which is a very welcome added benefit, of course. Simply install it and you’re done: the generator set has already been certified at the manufacturer’s.”
