NICE BLACK

He explains: “Our Account Manager at Pon Power had assured me that everything would be a nice black. But when I saw Cat Solar panels at another company with aluminium clips, I felt an improvement could be made. So I told Pon Power ‘if you promise black, it must be black’. They were a good sport about it and sorted it out. Now, that lovely streamlined black hall has a really streamlined black roof. You need to see it. It’s not only very efficient, it looks amazing as well!”

These panels are another step towards cultivating without fossil fuels.”

1661 CAT SOLAR PANELS

Thanks to a competitive quote by Pon Power, the deal was soon agreed and in September, 1661 Cat Solar panels were installed on the roof of Kreling’s pitch-black processing hall. But because appearances also count, the critical entrepreneur was not satisfied with the usual silver-coloured aluminium clips used to fix the panels.

RELIABLE PARTNER

Kreling therefore needed to find high-quality solar panels. There are plenty of suppliers, but how do you distinguish between the cowboys and the professionals? Kreling soon recognised the added value of a reliable partner. “You often see small parties being bought up by the big guys. As a customer, you then have to hope that things will work out for you too. For that reason, I chose the certainty of Pon Power”, he says.

I wanted the certainty of a stable, trusted supplier. That is how I found Pon Power.

REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION

For example, the company has fully automated sorting machines and cutting planters, but it is also working on reducing the use of pesticides. To tackle harmful insects, Diamond Flowers uses the insects’ natural enemies and is one of the few neonicotinoid-free growers in the Netherlands. When Kreling decided to further reduce his energy consumption by installing solar panels on the roof of the processing hall, he found Pon Power. He explains: “At the moment, the CO2 for my cultivation still comes from my CHP plant. However, we are about to get an external CO2 connection. By installing solar panels on the roof, I’ll be able to turn off my CHPs in the summer and generate all the power for our operations myself. Then, I won’t need to buy in any energy.”

HIGH AMBITIONS

As is often the case in the world of flower growers, Koen Kreling learnt the skills of the profession at a young age. Thirty years ago, his father started a 4000 m2 chrysanthemum nursery and over three decades, Kreling senior expanded the company to 36 hectares on six sites. In 2017, Kreling junior opened his own 12-hectare nursery in Zuilichem (municipality of Zaltbommel),

making him the youngest self-employed flower grower in the Netherlands at the age of 22. And Kreling has high ambitions in many areas. “When we built this company, we did it right first time. We wanted to be as pioneering as possible. From a commercial perspective, of course, but also to minimise our impact on the environment”, he explains.

Koen Kreling is one of those entrepreneurs who is actively shaping the future of flower cultivation. When he built his spray chrysanthemum nursery Diamond Flowers at the age of 22, he incorporated the latest innovations, techniques and insights. With a roof covered with Cat Solar panels, he is taking the next step towards achieving an emission-free nursery.
