The Kingmas chose two Cat 3512E engines with an integrated CEM, controlled by the engine’s computer. That guarantees optimal interaction between the engine and the exhaust aftertreatment. Ben Timmerman: ‘The great thing about this solution is that it’s the American trailblazer of Stage 5. And because it’s fitted with a DPF (soot filter), the entire package fulfils the Stage 5 emission requirements.'
GOOD SOLUTION

For some time, we’ve been reducing the NOx emission for Caterpillar with the Clean Emissions Module (CEM), an exhaust aftertreatment system with SCR catalyser. The advantage is that the engine can be adjusted to achieve the same low consumption as a CCR 1 engine.’ Furthermore, this exhaust aftertreatment system is so compact that it fits into the Maranta engine room without any additional adjustments being required.

Kingma explains: ‘Increasingly stringent NOx emission requirements, from CCR 0 to CCR 1 and CCR 2, had resulted in higher fuel consumption and more CO2 emissions. We

We feel a strong sense of responsibility for God’s creation.’ This all resulted in a package of requirements which was both future-proof and environmentally sustainable. However, the paradox is that until recently, these two elements hadn’t been moving at the same pace in all respects.

‘Repowering is a complex process,’ says Riemer Kingma. ‘Our previous Cat engines were 22 years old and after 120,000 operating hours, they needed replacing. For the new ones, we expect a similar number of hours. Whichever solution you choose, therefore, has quite an impact and determines your business operations for two decades.’ Obviously, economic motives like high performance reliability and low operational costs were important to Kingma and his wife Géke. They also wanted a total solution by only one manufacturer and the repowering had to be done at the Dolderman shipyard. But there were nobler motives involved too.
