Is it true that an upgrade of RFV is on the cards?

You are well informed. There will indeed be a new version, 2.0 The entire application has been redesigned from scratch. There will be a new graphical design with an interface which is easier, more user-friendly and less cluttered. The overview of several engines on a ship or several engines within a fleet has been improved significantly, which gives the customer more insight and a better overview. On top of that, this new platform offers more possibilities for improvement and developments, as well as integration with other potential data.

What does that give you?

By accessing historical data, you can make comparisons with earlier periods and monitor how well or how poorly an engine or the fleet is performing. The technical manager of a fleet has direct insight into the actual alarms and can monitor engine performance. Among other things, it provides a clear insight into which installation requires extra attention. If necessary, he can cooperate with the crew to optimise the engine performance. Moreover, maintenance can be planned more efficiently on the basis of real-time data in the operating hours.

That is a bit of a mouthful. What is Remote Fleet Vision?

The name is a give-away really. Cat Remote Fleet Vision (RFV) is a user-friendly interface providing insights 24/7 into the most important data of one or more Cat installations on board ships. So it is a service specifically aimed at the maritime sector. In concrete terms, it is a web application to which you can log in to see data of your entire fleet. RFV has a modern graphical layout in which up-to-date engine data are displayed with clocks on a dashboard. This way you get access to engine data whether you are on land or on board and you can create periodical or automatic reports. Within RFV, it is also possible to plot historical data from any number of engines.

What is Cat Connect?

Cat Connect is the whole of applications and services with which we provide customers insights and overviews based on data. So it is the umbrella of all our connectivity solutions which help customers to manage their installation(s). The central online portal for Cat Connect is my.cat.com. You will find all important information there in one place. For example, insights into your engine data, such as fuel consumption, alarms and hours of use. It also gives insight into lubricating oil results, Safety Service Letters, your maintenance agreement, user manuals and more. From my.cat.com you can click to Cat Connect services such as Remote Fleet Vision (suitable for shipping) and Cat Remote Asset Monitoring (suitable for applications on shore).

Can you give an example?

Collecting data provides insights and an overview and offers the possibility to monitor engines from a distance. This means that even if a ship is moored at the other side of the world, we can still monitor the engine alarms 24/7 in our Customer Support Centre. If there are any faults, the customer receives that information much faster. We aim to start giving advice to the crew with regard to optimising the engines based on engine data. In doing so, we can limit risks, because we can spot deviations in the data earlier on. Because we can spot deviations in the data earlier on, we can provide advice to limit risks.

MartenJan, why is digitisation so important in shipping?

Thanks to digitisation, our customers can manage their Cat installation(s) better, more efficiently and in a smarter way. With our productivity solutions we collect engine data from our customers. These data, however, are of no use if we don’t do anything with them. That is why we use these data to develop services that enable our customers to derive benefits, such as services to monitor installations or optimising their use.

Although propulsion and power supply in shipping is still primarily a mechanical process in 2021, data, digitisation and connectivity are now indispensable in the industry. Cat Connect is the digital platform of Caterpillar which helps customers increase the operational efficiency of their Cat installation(s). This smart combination of services and tools is under constant development, mostly with input from Pon Power.
For example, there will be an update of Remote Fleet Vision, which will provide customers with even better insights and easier overviews. We asked MartenJan Visser, Manager Cat Connect at Pon Power, about the developments in this area.
